Survey of generation rate, treatment capacity and minimal cost for treatment of health care waste in South Africa
UEMP partner: The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA)
Reference number: UEM-STTA-N-09-2007
Contact person: DEA-Waste, Ms Kelello Ntoampe
There have been incidents of illegal dumping of health care waste in the Gauteng region coupled with frequent S.20 ECA applications for permit amendments requesting to landfill or autoclave health care waste including anatomical waste of human origin. Supporting information for the requests and identified cause for the illegal dumping is the shortage of HCW treatment facilities in the country.
DEAT needs to appoint an expert who has vast experience in the South African health care waste management to conduct a survey of how much waste is generated and assess the current capacity and advise DEAT on the way forward in terms of sustainable HCW management in SA. The expert is required over a period of one month from the time of signing the contract. These inputs will be used to inform the decision whether DEAT should conduct a feasibility study for a HCW public private partnership. They will also be used to solve the current capacity challenges and inform permitting of HCW facility in terms of priority.
