Significant quantities of coal and wood continue to be used as a fuel in many households, especially in dense, low-income communities and this represents a major cause for concern with regard to air pollution and health risk potentials. Despite the extent of electrification, the use of other fuels for cooking, space heating and lighting requirements is still persistent and is one of the most pressing air quality issues in South Africa
In response to this issue DEAT in collaboration with a number of institutions including the Sedibeng District Municipality is launching the 2008 Winter Clean Fires Campaign.
The objectives of the Clean Fires Campaign are as follows; by the end of winter 2008, at least 50% of the households in the Vaal Triangle Air-Shed Priority Area that use coal fires for cooking and heating are made aware of the impacts of pollution from “dirty” fires; are made aware of the Basa Njengo Magogo fire-making methodology; are motivated to change to cleaner fire-making practices and are able to implement the methodology in their own homes with back-up support and encouragement from local Environmental Health Practitioners; Community Health Workers, Community Environmental Workers and Community Leaders
The launch of this campaign will take place on the 7th of July 2008 in the Sedibeng District municipality and the objective of the project is to support the launch
