R 60 million boost for UEMP metro partners to implement Climate Change and Energy Efficiency initiatives
Published date: 25 August 2008
In the light of the upcoming United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP) 14 and COP 15, that will be hosted in Denmark in December 2009, the UEMP announced on 16 April 2008, that each of the UEMP metro partners have been granted R 15 million to implement projects to boost the reduction of green house gas emissions. This initiative is in response to Climate Change, linked to COP 15. The UEMP metro partners are: City of Cape Town, Ekurhuleni, eThekwini and City of Johannesburg. The projects which will be implemented by the partners will focus on roll outs or improvements of existing planned energy efficiency and climate change related projects. The projects should be practical in nature and on the ground demonstration initiatives.
In order to define suitable themes and related projects and to provide a platform for the UEMP metro partners to discuss their planned initiatives, a one day planning workshop was held on 15 May 2008 in Stellenbosch. The planning workshop was held back to back with the Renewable Energy City Summit of the South African Cities Network (SACN), which took place on 13 and 14 May 2008. The outcomes of the planning workshop were proposals for business plans for each metro. The business plans contain projects that will be implemented, aiming to contribute to South Africa's profile in the upcoming UNFCC COP 14, COP 15 and beyond. The projects include practical initiatives in terms of transport, energy efficiency retrofitting of street lights and buildings, sustainable livelihood interventions, climate proofing in communities as well as education and capacity building in the energy and climate proofing sector. The business plans were approved by the UEMP Programme Steering Committee (PSC) during the ninth PSC meeting, held on 4 June 2008 and will be implemented 2008 – June 2010. For further reading please refer to 1) the summary of the workshop and 2) the overview of the business plans.
Sustainable Energy Africa (SEA) has been appointed by the Royal Danish Embassy (RDE) to assist the metros with the implementation of their business plans, through one on one support and consultation with each metro.
