 Sedibeng (Vaal Triangle) District Municipality

The Sedibeng District Municipality covers much of southern and eastern Gauteng. It is a large area with a diverse settlement structure ranging from dense urban to farmland and rural hamlets.
Within the boundaries of the Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) there are three local councils, namely Emfuleni, Midvaal and Lesedi. Emfuleni Local Municipality (LM) is predominantly urban in nature and associated with large industries such as coal mining and iron and steel processing. The Midvaal LM has a predominantly rural population, and also Lesedi LM is predominantly rural with an extensive agriculture. SDM is characterised by generally poor air quality. This is a result of heavy steel and chemical industrial activity, as well as coal smoke emanating from the historically disadvantaged township areas.
The national Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism has declared Sedibeng to be a priority area in terms of the Air Quality Management Act. Among the projects supported by the UEMP which the Sedibeng District Municipality will implement are:
- A wetlands survey project, allowing for better spatial planning activities in the district municipality.
- The design and implementation of projects supporting the Sedibeng region's environmental programme of action.
- Support for the redesign of municipal health services, including a new set of health by-laws.
- Implementation of the environmental indicator programme.
- Training and development of the capacity of Environmental Health Practitioners as well as the Air Quality Management Practitioners.
- Implementation of the Air Quality Management Plan.
