Implementation of the Waste Management Bill: The programme supported the preparation of the Waste Management Bill which was signed off by the South African cabinet July 2007 for processing in Parliament. With support from the Programme further technical assistance is provided for the work of the Parliament and the implementation of the Act to be is in process.
The Waste Management Bill defines the major challenges and goals in the Waste sector. All partners are conducting substantial projects developing Waste management, including waste management planning and strategies and interventions into incineration and other waste facilities, on all levels of government, country wide.
The Programme is in particular providing support for improved service delivery in relation to waste fill sites, medical waste, and to clean up operations in relation to old asbestos mines. Also the programme is supporting the investigation of the possibilities of incineration of hazardous wastes.
