Environmental health
The Environmental Health sector in South Africa includes numerous challenges, and a great many officials who have very differentiated expertise, experience and assignments are employed in all three spheres of government.

With the new Environmental Health Act in place, the goals and issues of the sector are now identified. Among the immediate next steps is clarify the tasks of the role players of the sector and actors in all three spheres for the delivery of these goals.

Currently, with support from the Programme, the Department of Health is finishing a major study aiming to line up the current upcoming challenges and solutions in this respect. Also the department is rolling out projects for education and capacity building for officials in all spheres of government, in particular in relation to in-door air pollution and the subsequent health effects.

The municipalities are restructuring and building capacity to accommodate the goals of today and tomorrow.
