A fund for activities of applied research is run by the UEM Programme. It supports and promotes applied research in relation to the themes of the Programme. A budget of 11 mill Rands for 5 years is allocated to this purpose.
The partners propose themes and topics of research and discuss these on workshops. A list of the titles of the projects currently researched and the projects in the pipeline is provided below.
Energy research as a focus theme. In line with the energy focus of municipal activities (read more) it is expected that the research activities will focus on these issues as well.

- Ecological foot printing for all UEM programme municipalities
- Sample survey in three climatic zones on how much poor households spend on (a) various sources of energy; and (b) water and sanitation (including treating lung disease)
- The efficacy of transitional cleaner coal fire making practices in improving health and air quality
- A comprehensive inventory of volatile organic emissions in the City of Cape Town
- Review of international leading practice on incentives to promote compliance with environmental regulations
- Study in Richard’s Bay – health study monitoring the respiratory ailments of residents from contaminants
- Pesticides on the streets –registration and deregistration. Regulation of pesticides, health communication strategy, accessing knowledge of the traders of the pesticides
- Database of Best Practices on strategic environmental assessments, including a database of consultants working in UEM.
