The Danish International Development Agency (Danida) is providing the funding for the Urban Environmental Management Programme (UEMP). Danida is an organisation inside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark that provides assistance and collaborates with developing countries and countries in transition.
In the Danish development cooperation with South Africa the overall objectives are to contribute to the development of good governance and the promotion of democracy, as well as to alleviate the widespread poverty among the black population.
There is a long-standing relationship between Denmark and South Africa with more than R1 billion donated in total. The two countries have agreed to replace the Danish transitional assistance programme with a long-term development cooperation programme, thus paving the way for a stronger partnership between the two countries. This strategy is the result of a consultative process, based on South Africa’s development priorities and Denmark’s overall development policy entitled 'Partnership 2000'.
